When ordering, he selected that he was in Canada from the drop down menu and that created the drop menu where he could pick Ontario. He completed the order and clicked next. The order form came back showing United States now instead of Canada. All other countries were now removed and only US appeared. Since he could not change it from US to Canada, he just clicked next. Another page came up with an error. So, from their site, he cannot order a new MJ for Canada.
I was watching this as he did it and we tried it twice.
Any ideas? How can you order a MJ so he can get a 416 Toronto number?
He can go to http://techdirectcanada.ca/flyer/ and buy 1 from them for $43.99. Any idea if they'll allow him to register it and get a 416 number? Or to get a Canadian number, does it have to be bought directly from them. Can they tell?
Ok, last question, on his current MJ, he bought the extra 5 years service because they advertised 1 free number change and that when Canadian numbers were available, you could change to it. He doesn't mind paying again to buy a new MJ to get the Canadian number but will they transfer his 5 extra years over to a new MJ?
Thanks for reading.
I am sorry you friend is having difficulty getting a Canadian area code. I waited almost two years, so I definitely understand how frustrating this is. Here is what happened in my situation:
I purchased my MJ two years ago after being told Canadian area codes would be "available soon." I kept waiting for Canadian area codes to become available. I did not register the MJ with a US number. Based on what I am reading about not being able to switch from a US number, I am glad I waited. I was told by numerous MJ representatives to get a US number and that I would be able to switch to a Canadian number once they became available. Perhaps this will be the case in time. After waiting two years for the option to chose a Canadian number, I was thinking the chances were very slim for this to ever become available. I am glad I was proven wrong.
Is your friend trying to order a MJ and have it shipped to Canada? It seems like he was unable to order from the MJ site if I understand correctly. I sent a message to a MJ chat representative and was told Canadian customers are able to order and that only new MJ's are able to register for a Canadian number for an extra $10.00 per year.
As far as buying elsewhere, I really do not see why it would matter, since it is still an unregistered MJ device. To me, it would be the same issue if you or your friend received a new one as a gift.
Does your friend know anyone in the United States who would be able to order a MJ for him and then ship it to him? I only mention this in case the issue of not being able to order through the website comes up again.
If your friend does try ordering through the website, and has trouble again with the order, please have him start a chat and let the representative walk him through this. It may be a hassle going back and forth between the order form and chat window, but he should be able to place an order and have it shipped to Canada. I was able to do this and I know others who have also done this.
Best wishes,
Canadianlady

First, the Canadian codes are only available for those registering a Magicjack. At this time, previously registered numbers may not switch to a Canadian number.
Second, the numbers available are limited. When I last checked, only 3 provinces, Ontario, Manitoba, and Quebec, had some area codes listed, but not many.
Third, Canadian numbers cost an extra $10.00 per year. I had waited almost two years to register my Magicjack while waiting for a Canadian number. My area code was not available, but I chose one for another portion of Ontario.
A representative told me more numbers/area codes are being worked on because there has been such a strong demand from Canadian customers. I also asked if Canadian customers will be able to switch to a new number one time for free, like American customers are able to, but she did not have an answer for me.
If you go to the Magicjack website and the list of area codes, scroll down below the US area codes and you will notice the new list of Canadian codes.

I must admit being pleasantly surprised that MagicJack actually made Canadian area codes available. Another example of "good things come to those who wait."

Well the fact they have Canadian numbers is at least an improvement... hopefully they will get more soon since they seem to have sold out of these ones rather quickly!!
Hopefully they will pickup the 705 area code as well!! |

A Magicjack chat representative told me they are working to release more Canadian numbers and area codes very soon.
I also hope area code 705 becomes available soon. |

| But did they tell you whether existing MJ owners can switch to a Canadian area code. They tell me you need to buy a new MJ to be able to get one. That wasn't the deal when I bought mine. |

It seems pretty obvious by now from all the posts that they are not going to allow current customers to switch to a Canadian number for free... you will have to order a new MJ with a Canadian number.
But you are still not going to find a better deal for a Canadian number than $30 a year! |

Yes You need to buy a new device to get Canadian phone number and it is one choice...You will not be able to change your Canadian number to another Canadian number for the same device.......When registered you will not have access to Canadian number for free change number.... (Answer from higher level support of MagicJack)
I agree with you.. the info was when available it will be possible to change for Canadian number....( It was an answer to sell MJ to Canadian... now you have to buy a new device for a Canadian number) , and there is a 10$ extra each year for Canadian number. |

Good news (I think)
I wrote Dan Borislow and got a reply from his manager.
Here's what he said this morning, 12/11/09.
Dear Len,
Dan asked me to respond to this.
The option for existing customer's to change to a Canadian phone number will be available shortly. No need to buy a new magicJack.
Sincerely,
Richard

Be nice RjG... cbert was just trying to put links to several related threads all together (makes it easier for people that don't know about the other threads to find them)...
You probably wasted more time writing these responses than you did reading his responses! lol |
