I do!
Canadian area codes are "COMING SOON"!!!

Hahaha, but seriously...
I would forget about it.
It's clearly never going to happen.
Us Canadians always get the short end of the stick, eh? Sad

I have been religiously "chatting" since Sept 2008 about getting a Canadian area code, all to no joy. I keep getting " our engineers are working on it" or "it's next on our list". One could almost get discouraged. Meanwhile I get to make "free" long distance, so I guess that's worth it.

Don't hold your breath waiting. We have US phone numbers because MJ is tightly related to YMAX, which is a full fledged CLEC in the US. YMAX is not licensed as a CLEC in Canada. Until MJ makes a contract for DIDs with a Canadian phone company or YMAX becomes a Canadian phone company, there won't be any DIDs in Canada. Since any path to adding Canadian DIDs would require MJ to make an investment using real money, I don't expect this to happen in my lifetime.

As a parallel, I can't think of any "first class" US-based VoIP phone companies that offer Canadian phone numbers for the same price as US phone numbers, if at all.

actually, I'm just as happy having a US area code. when I was asked to make my selection, I tried a state where a friend lives and by happen chance got an area code exactly the same as his so now not only can I contact him but he can call me just like any other local call. Now is that kewl or what eh?

I think we will find that when they come up with Canadian area codes, they will charge so much for them that we will not want to pay the extra money and just keep using the US codes.

Please note that Canadian area codes for MagicJack became available as of late November 2009. There are some limitations:

First, the Canadian codes are only available for those registering a Magicjack. At this time, previously registered numbers may not switch to a Canadian number.

Second, the numbers available are limited. When I last checked, only 3 provinces, Ontario, Manitoba, and Quebec, had some area codes listed, but not many.

Third, Canadian numbers cost an extra $10.00 per year. I had waited almost two years to register my Magicjack while waiting for a Canadian number. My area code was not available, but I chose one for another portion of Ontario.

A representative told me more numbers/area codes are being worked on because there has been such a strong demand from Canadian customers. I also asked if Canadian customers will be able to switch to a new number one time for free, like American customers are able to, but she did not have an answer for me.

If you go to the Magicjack website and the list of area codes, scroll down below the US area codes and you will notice the new list of Canadian codes.

I must admit being pleasantly surprised that MagicJack actually made Canadian area codes available. Another example of "good things come to those who wait."

Canadian customers will NOT be able to switch to a new Canadian number one time for free. It will be free Only if you select a US number for your second choice........Answer from MJ second level agent on December 4.

To get a new Canadian number you need to purchase a new device !!!!!! and the pay 10$ / year Extra

A friend did the customer service chat thing and verified this to be true. So he went online to order a new MJ from their site. When ordering, he selected that he was in Canada from the drop down menu and that created the drop menu where he could pick Ontario. He completed the order and clicked next. The order form came back showing United States now instead of Canada. All other countries were now removed and only US appeared. Since he could not change it from US to Canada, he just clicked next. Another page came up with an error. So, from their site, he cannot order a new MJ for Canada.

I was watching this as he did it and we tried it twice.

Any ideas? How can you order a MJ so he can get a 416 Toronto number?

He can go to http://techdirectcanada.ca/flyer/ and buy 1 from them for $43.99. Any idea if they'll allow him to register it and get a 416 number? Or to get a Canadian number, does it have to be bought directly from them. Can they tell?

Ok, last question, on his current MJ, he bought the extra 5 years service because they advertised 1 free number change and that when Canadian numbers were available, you could change to it. He doesn't mind paying again to buy a new MJ to get the Canadian number but will they transfer his 5 extra years over to a new MJ?

Thanks for reading.

this company clearly doesn't treat Cdn customers fairly. I have a US area code too and wanted to change to 416. A while back an agent told me it could be done but the website hadn't been updated to list Cdn area codes in the drop down menu.
I am now told I can never change my number to a Cdn area code but would need to buy a new MJ and then pay an extra $10 per year for that "privilege". what a terrible way to treat existing customers. shabby to say the least.

For any other Ontarians registering around this time, there's only Ontario numbers left in the 289 area code, more specifically, Burlington (289-813-04xx), and Oakville (289-812-04xx). Moreover, there's only about ~25 available under each one. Slim pickings :S Would have been nice to have a bit more choice, or at least be able to change to another Canadian area code w/o having to buy a whole new MJ+$10. Confused

The current website indicates area codes available in both 416 and 647 for Toronto. I spoke to another agent today about switching my US area code for a Cdn area code and she advised that "their engineers are working on it" but couldn't give me a guesstimate of the time.
she clearly said they were planning on making it available, but I won't hold my breath.
