Get T5710 1.2G, replaced with 512 RAM and 2G IDE Flash from Transcend.

After Loaded with stroths 1.2, it give error of "A disk read error occurred" any one can help me it this ? thanks.

1.2 requires a 1gb internal flash. I don't know if it would have any issues restoring to a 2gb drive. You might try restoring again and seeing if it makes any difference.

Stroths,

I have one of your thin clients, got it from you way back in July. Before I got it set up I ended up getting the Blue screen of death and assumed it crashed. I am just now getting around to trying to get this thing to work again. I downloaded 1.2 and unzipped to a usb dok and started following the instructions, but there appears to be a missing step between 4 and 5. after doing step 4, checking the box to create a dos startup disk, I only have the option to "choose using dos system files located at:" (and here is where I do not know where to choose from) so I cannot move on to step 5.

Try doing it without the option checked for DOS startup disk and see if that works. I believe that was a carryover from stroths 1.1 that's not needed in 1.2 (I think).

Just got a t5720 off ebay for ~$75. Upgraded the ram to 1gb ($11) and the flash to 2gb ($25). This is a little bigger than my t5700 and t5710, but I like it. I managed to do an nlited HP OEM install of XP Pro SP3 (not XPe) that is legit. It's basically like the copy of XP that comes with a new Dell as its set to not need registration providing the BIOS has some certain bits in it to identify its a Dell (HP in this case). Took a little over a gb of the 2gb flash drive up.

This puppy is faaast. I tweaked the heck out of it and installed the EWF drivers, disabled the pagefile, put a 192mb ramdrive, etc.

I plan on using this as a call recording box using an app called Cain. I had it running on my desktop, but it is a network hog for the pc its running on.

On a side note, the 5720 uses a socket A. I stuck an athlon 3300 which booted, but only at 1750mhz and got warm fast. Just testing, so I'll stick with the stock CPU (for now) Smile

stroths,

First of all thanks for all your posts and more power to you. I have been busy playing with the 5710 & 5720 and boy I tell you I have never been more busy than the last 2 months playing with these toys. I just had XPe SP3 on a 1GB flash on my 5720 with 100MB space left enough to squeeze in MJ and AntiVirus. I have some questions if you don't mind.

1. If using 5720 for Internet Browsing and e-mail - Will it be necessary/beneficial to install Antivirus e.g. AVGFree Version or maybe Windows Defender?

2. Wow! how did you get a 5720 for $75 on eBay And 1GB RAM for $11 I wanna know please? Good things happen to those who wait or good things happen to good people or both? I 'll go with BOTH.

Thanks a lot and Happy Holidays!

I install AVG and Sygate Personal Firewall (which still can be found if you look carefully) on all of my thin clients that are exposed to the Internet. The nice thing about a thin client, of course, is that, if it gets infected, all you have to do is reboot. However, as my thin clients all sit on my LAN, I'm unwilling to take the risk of an infection spreading. Of course, this is a "belt-and-suspenders" approach, but I've also never had a virus infect any of my systems.

Stroth beat me on the lowest price for a 5720 -- I got one once for $90. The trick is simply to keep monitoring eBay. Every so often, someone will offer one without really knowing what it is. I've also picked up a couple of 5730s for $250 each from a reputable Canadian computer dealer who lists on eBay. I'm still not sure why they were listed so low (these are in current production and sell for $400-600 each on eBay). By the way, if you're having fun with your 5710 and 5720, you should play with a 5730. These have a built-in HDMI port and make good video servers.

PTravel

I have the Windows Security Center running with Windows Firewall and of course it asks for an Antivirus so I am wondering if I really need an Antivirus since this HP TCs are virtually Virus proof with just a Reboot then what about the Spyware? so I thought of the free Windows Defender.
You got me beat with the 5720 I got mine for 91+S&H LOL!

Anyways thanks for the reply!
Happy Holidays to you.

PTravel got the 1st one. As for the 2nd, I just got lucky and bid on an ebay listing. The $11 Ram was a special Fry's was running at the time. Check out fatwallet.com or slickdeals.net for deals on RAM and just about any other new item.

I installed a 4GB Hitachi microdrive in another one of my T5710 and this time took some photos while I was doing it; so I thought I'd share my experiences with you folks.

Here is a link to the full article T5710 Microdrive

And the following is a link to a zip file with the article, full size photos and batch files included: The Project Files

PostPosted: Sat Dec 27, 2008 12:42 pm    Post subject: CF to 44 Pin IDE Adapter Adaptor Female Reply with quote

I haven't received my T5710 yet but by reading all the posts on hardware upgrades I am considering the CF/microdrive adapter route. I found the following eBay item http://cgi.ebay.com/CF-to-44-Pin-IDE-Adapter-Adaptor-Female-For-PC-20-197A_W0QQitemZ120354487321QQcmdZViewItemQQimsxZ20081226?IMSfp=TL081226118005r26026 and would like your opinions. It looks like there is a potential interference problem on the right side of the board when installed (using stroths picture). Maybe I'll just get it and see for myself.

Thanks.

nyislander,

I don't think that adapter will work because of the extra space on either side of the 44 pin connector. I believe somewhere earlier in the thread someone (Holman I believe) got one of these I found and it didn't fit right. If going the CF route, your best bet is to get a 44 pin cable and a CF adapter with a 44 pin male connector.

EDIT: It was VaHam (see below)

Actually it was me who tried that and there is not enough space. I posted some photos earlier in the thread which show you it just won't fit. But the $2.82 one and a 6" cable works out very nice.

Also read what I wrote about finding a CF card that will be seen as a fixed drive rather than a removable one. Otherwise, you will run into issues with XPe (or XP) not wanting to run correctly. I know you can circumvent that with the Hitachi driver I also mentioned on regular XP. I never tried it on XPe, but I imagine it would work there too (after a commit).

Unless you are dead set on a CF card, I would highly recommend you get the Transcend DOM instead as they are fairly cheap now, work better and are faster. Also keep in mind whichever route you take, the XPe image HP provides will not work correctly on any media larger than 1gb. If you go over 1gb you will either need to use a regular copy of XP or install a patch/crack to the XPe image to make it ignore the license check.

Thanks to stroths and HolmanGT for the great posts. I was able to setup my "new" TC pretty easily with all of the great info on this site.

I seem to have an odd unit TC because I got a 5710 with 1.1Ghz, 256/256. I won a 5700 1GHz, 256/256 in eBay so I was pleasantly surprised to receive a 5710 with USB 2.0. Thanks to stroths for posting the pics showing both units. I would have never known I had a 5710 had I not seen the pics.

The only issue I ran into was the BSOD which was easily resolved by updating the USB drivers. I also didn't install DirectX since I'm conserving precious DOM space until my 1GB Transcend DOM arrives. I only have 11MB free with the stock 256 MB DOM after removing all of the non-essential apps.

Now I'm off to test if a 1GB RAM stick will work with my 5710 with an 8600 processor. Keeping my fingers crossed.
