Looks like I got lucky again. The 1GB stick works perfectly and it's not even pc2700 RAM. BIOS says 00 but HP System Information lists 1024MB in Memory Slot 1.

I installed Kingston ValueRAM 1GB PC3200 400MHz DDR1 which I bought at Buy.com last month for my wife's laptop. I figured it would be backwards compatible and it sure seems to be.

It looks like Buy.com is still selling it at the same price I bought it last month - $26.99 with free shipping.

http://www.buy.com/prod/kingston-valueram-1gb-400mhz-ddr1-sodimm-notebook-memory-kvr400so-1gr/q/loc/101/207894804.html

Since I now have 1GB of RAM I increased my Z: drive/RAM disk to the max setting of 64MB. Is there any way to increase the RAM disk size to a bigger size, say 128MB?

Yes and no. It is possible to have a larger ramdrive, but not with the software HP provides.

Since I ended up using a nlited version of XP on mine, I wanted a ram drive solution. I had pulled the one off the thin client image, but wanted something with more flexibility.

Check out this freeware alternative - LINK

You can set it up to just about any size you want.

I just tried it on my HP vmware image and it worked, so follow these instructions. NOTE: As with any changes, do so at your own risk.

Instructions

1. Download the software I mentioned and unzip the folder to the location of your choosing (I picked C:\ramdisk).

2. Go to that folder and run the ramdisk.exe. Install a FIXED drive and choose any available drive letter (will be changed later).

3. Run regedit.exe and navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Ramdisk and change the "Start" key to 4. This will disable the default MS/HP ramdisk on next boot.

4. Next navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RRamdisk\Parameters and change the "DriveLetter" parameter to Z:

5. Commit, reboot, and you should be good. You will run the ramdisk.exe from whereever you unzipped it to anytime you want to change the ramdisk size.

Note to VAHam.
Dude! Great write up. I followed all recommendations and the upgrade went flawless. Am using a 1GB SSD w/512K of memory. Using Teamviewer to remotely monitor the TC. Only new item is I'm using a utility called "Power Off" to schedule daily reboots. The system is running like a top - much better than with the 256/256 config I originally bought.

Thanks VAHam.

Thanks for the kudos Dusty! Glad everything went smooth for you! I am assuming it is the microdrive write up your talking about since you mention the 1G SSD and all the microdrive info applies to flash cards as well.

I think the biggest performance boost probably comes from the increase of the RAM to 512M but having a little more C:\ space is a bonus too and very cheap these days.

I just use the task scheduler in XPe to perform automated reboots. You have to enable the service since it is not enabled by default.

Then you can just set up a task schedule for when ever you like using the command:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\shutdown.exe /r /t 01 /f

and the Start In directory as:
C:\WINDOWS\system32

Have Fun these but CAUTION these things are addictive! Smile

Thanks VaHam
I went with the 1GB Transcend DOM.
I agree on the main boost being from the 512M of RAM. Once I saw that my VP was spiking to 190M - even with VM set to 0 - and knowing that I only had 256 to work with, I knew that had to be fixed. For me, 256M just didn't seem like enough headroom.
Anyway all remains well and the MJ is a great moneysaver.

Best regards to all

Yeap upgrading the TCs does boost their performance but in reality they serve magicJack just fine in a stock 256/256 configuration; so if your only using it to serve up magicJack it really isn't necessary. Never tried to shoe horn MJ into a 192M TC; I am sure that is harder to do but others here have even done that.

Enjoy!

Stroths,

I have one of your thin clients, got it from you way back in July. Before I got it set up I ended up getting the Blue screen of death and assumed it crashed. I am just now getting around to trying to get this thing to work again. I downloaded 1.2 and unzipped to a usb dok and started following the instructions, but there appears to be a missing step between 4 and 5. after doing step 4, checking the box to create a dos startup disk, I only have the option to "choose using dos system files located at:" (and here is where I do not know where to choose from) so I cannot move on to step 5.

Ok I also could not get the HPUSBFW.EXE to work because it kept asking for the DOS system files. Where I was stumped but I found at this site...
on the site http://www.bay-wolf.com/usbmemstick.htm

it has a Download Link for the Windows 98 system files

You NEED for this to work. After I extracted the files and directed the program to use them it went flawlessly!
So if anyone is having problem with step 3&4 use the download link or even use that program to create the USB Disk and then Copy Stroths file over to it and it will work !

Again thanks to stroths for the EASY Implantation of this image to make it so much easier for all of us to run our MJ's !!!

By the way I am running a T5700 with a transend 1Gig Flash and a 512 Ram Stick, and Team viewer to access the TC.

Hi stroths,

Will this work for me by following your instructions?

Hi Folks,

Just wanted to write about my experience installing the OS using the Stroths 1.2 pack. I figured out why they say "Read Carefully" before you try a hack.

So I downloaded everything and did everything like the post asked me to and I rebooted the TC with the USB DOK in the USB port. I typed Y and clicked enter like the post asked me to. A lot of text started scrolling thorugh my screen, so fast that I could not read it. I assumed everything was going great. WRONG. This scrolling text went on for two hours and nothing really happened. I could not read what the text was trying to tell me. So I went back to the post and read again (CAREFULLY this time). It was then that I saw that the DOM had to be at least 1 GB, mine is at 512. I am assuming that is what caused the non stop scrolling text and thats probably what the scrolling text was trying to tell me.. that there wasn't enough space. LOL

Any way, I am gonna try the Windows XPe method next and will report the results.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Hello People

I have tried and tried and tried, but nothing is working for me. Please do help me.

I have tried three different flash drives to reinstall the OS on my T5710 (512/512). I have tried Stroth's method, and it boots up just fine and starts to install the OS, but then complains about "Attempting to access beyond end of disk" or something of the sort.

I try to install Win XPe using sp36064 or sp33234, and it just wont even boot up from the flash drive. I get a "Non-System disck or disk error. Replace and press any key when ready" error. I am at my wits end. My TC does not have an OS right now.

Please Please Please help me reinstall the OS and get my magicJack working with it.

Thanks in Advance

Ok So I was able to install Windows XPe on my TC finally. Turns out you have to remove the power to the TC, connect your USB flash drive and then reconnect power again for it to recognize the thumb drive and to boot from it.

So i was able to install everything, remove unwanted components, install teamViewer and then fix the Blue Screen of Death when plugging in the MagicJack.

Now..I do not know how to ask Sygate secuity agent to allow magic jack to access the internet.

Any ideas?

Thanks in Advance

I'm looking for a simple plug-n-play low-cost Thin Client that is ready to go out of the box to work with my MJ.
