I just installed a Transcend DOM 2 gig unit and Windows XPe will not activate. Any Ideas what to do?

It's a HP t5710e 800mhz.

If I recall from the forum, the 5710 has a 1 Gig limit on the DOM.

Here is a link to the full article T5710 Microdrive

And the following is a link to a zip file with the article, full size photos and batch files included: The Project Files

Awesome directions! I have one question: If I wanted to install some flavor of XP on a MD what would I need to to differently?

Do Magic Jack's online auto-upgrades need to be committed for them to be permanent? Seems like every time I reboot my t5710 it does an upgrade. I'm starting to believe it is the same upgrade, but I thought the upgrades were being saved on the jack itself or does it need write permission (to be committed) on the 5710?

yes if you don't do a commit the update is not saved

The HP flash image includes several programs which probably will be of no use to you and take up precious space on the internal flash drive. The list below are the ones I suggest you may want to remove.

Links 2, 4, 5, and 6 have become invalid. Anything to replace them? Since there is no uninstall entry for them in the menus and thin clients don't have an "Add/Remove Programs" I'm not sure what other options there are. I Use Lin's Startup Control Panel to keep them starting up at boot, but that isn't the same as removing them.

What are others with thin clients doing now?

Hi everyone,

Wow - you guys seem to know a lot about these T5710s! I hope you can help me.

I've been using one as a mini-server for a couple of years but I've always had a problem whereby it just hangs at the BIOS screen if my USB2 hard drive is plugged in at boot time. Recently this has become a real pain because I've moved house, had building work done, reorganised the house, etc., etc. and the "server" keeps being moved. Sometimes it takes me 40 minutes of trial and error to get the T5710 to boot up correctly because I need to connect the USB 2 drive late enough that the BIOS doesn't see it, but early enough that XPe does see it and sets up my shares correctly! Its been a complete nightmare.

So tonight, in an effort to fix it, I flashed the BIOS with the 1.1B BIOS from here: http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodTypeId=12454&prodSeriesId=339208&swItem=PSG_I21179-105260&prodNameId=379363&swEnvOID=1058&swLang=13&taskId=135&mode=5

It did say that the model number didn't match but I was sure it was right and I ran the flasher with the ignore switch set (dumbo!). Now I appear to have totally screwed the pooch. The HP turns on, or at least the green light comes on, but nothing comes out of the VGA port and I can't connect to it remotely using RDP (which I could previously).

Is it possible to reflash the BIOS somehow from a USB key or similar? Can anyone point me in the right direction as to how to do that please?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Many thanks

Simon Dale

Use the OS from here -

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodTypeId=12454&prodSeriesId=439748&prodNameId=439749&swEnvOID=1058&swLang=13&mode=2&taskId=135&swItem=vc-51791-1

When you run this program just tell it to format your USB stick, not ISO or Deploy. Then boot your thin client from the USB stick. It sounds like your thin client could already be set to boot form USB which is what may be causing your boot problems when you have a USB device attached without an OS to boot from on it. If in doubt read the first page of this thread carefully especially about 2/3 of the way down the page where it talks about flashing the OS onto the thin client.

I think I've screwed the BIOS, not the OS. I literally get nothing from the VGA port of the TC now.

I am downloading the OS from the link that you provided and I will try it but I don't know if the TC is even capable of booting now.

To reply to your second point I think it was set to boot from USB second before I reflashed the BIOS. I dare say those settings are lost now though...along with the BIOS.

The problem with booting was not related to the boot from USB setting. I have tried with all such settings on and off, even USB keyboard and mouse, USB controller, etc, etc. A couple of other people had the same problem here: http://h30499.www3.hp.com/t5/Workstations-EVO-Deskpro/t7510-and-USB-Hard-Drive-boot-hang/td-p/494857/page/2

Thanks a lot for your help, I really appreciate it

Simon

Unfortunately its as I thought, nothing happens when I turn on the TC with or without the newly created USB key. The green light comes on, the network port light comes on and the network activity light flashes a couple of times but that's it.

Since the TC is no longer capable of booting itself up I guess the only way to reflash the BIOS would be with some kind of hardware (EEPROM flasher or similar)? I don't own such a thing and its probably beyond my capabilities so I guess I'll put this down to experience unless anyone can think of anything?

Perhaps a netbook with a broken screen would be a worthy replacement.

I've just won another T5710 800/512/256 on eBay for £24.50 so fingers crossed I can swap the SSD over and not even lose my settings. Fingers crossed this one will boot with my USB 2 drive plugged in!

Do your T5710's boot OK with USB 2 drives plugged in then?

Both links work for me. Maybe some one else can try and see what they get? The first link is the HP page for XPe and the second is the actual download of the file itself. Not sure why you don't get them unless these are only valid domestically. Some companies regionalize the availability of some downloads.

You should be able to re-flash the BIOS from a USB stick using the BIOS from here -

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodTypeId=12454&prodSeriesId=1809592&prodNameId=1809593&swEnvOID=1058&swLang=13&mode=2&taskId=135&swItem=ir-54924-1

If you can't manually enter the BIOS by hitting F10 during boot, then you may want to unplug the unit from all power, open it up and drop the battery out of it for the night to see if it resets. Most motherboards have a jumper that lets you reset the BIOS to factory default. I have not found that yet on the t5710.

Since you have two TCs now, it sounds like you can afford to experiment a bit more.
