I've had my magicjack for about 2 weeks now, and I couldn't be happier with it! I joined this forum because this is where I found most of the info that led me to buy one. I haven't had any technical issues whatsoever, but if I ever do I know that I'm already in the right place
I have to say that all of the negative reviews that this product gets made me think twice about buying an mj. If it weren't for the fact that I was so meticulous about my research I may be missing out on such a good deal right now.
I'm glad I took the time to see that most of the problems people were complaining about could have been fixed if they'd simply taken the time to read the wealth of information available. People who can't understand hows and whys just post that it's a ripoff, a scam, etc. I'm guessing that about 80% of the negative reviews are from people who have issues with THEIR machine (usually a software incompatibility), not the mj-and either can't or won't figure out how to resolve it.
As for the rest, it seems that some of those who ARE willing, the complaints seem to be that there is no customer service number....and there we go again with the scam/ripoff talk.
After reading the owner's explanation in a newspaper article of why they did not have a voice line, it does makes sense to me. Besides....what's wrong with the chat help? Even if you have to wait until you can get elevated to a higher tier for technical support.
For $20 a year, people seem to think that they should get a one-on-one answering service....their very own IT pro to hold their hand and pick apart their machine.
Want to see some horrible customer service? Ma Bell is why I quit land lines 4 years ago. They had several numbers you could call-how reassuring, right? Have a problem after hours, or be one of many after a weather issue, and 24/7 chat support won't seem so bad after all.
I originally used the mj on my laptop, just because I was excited to try it out. It's a new machine just a few weeks old, running Vista Longhorn on my home network with 2 other machines. Had it up and running in about 3 minutes. I loved that I was able to choose an area code from back home. I live in Arizona now, but all of our friends and family can call us without long distance charges.
Having been years since we'd had a land line, I had one crappy old analog corded phone buried in a closet that was used to make the first calls. I did notice a low buzzing sound in the background of some calls, sometimes the phone would not ring audibly (it was going through my comp speakers, which I had turned off) and sometimes my mother-who is hearing impaired-had difficulty hearing me on her end. Sometimes connection was sloppy and people said it sounded as though I was far away.
Having read about these issues before, I knew what it was and set out to find a decent phone that was more compatible with voip.
After reading a ton of reviews online, I settled on a 6.0 dect GE 2 handset cordless model. For anyone reading this with the same issue-
Digital phones/hardware are necessary for voip quality, no matter who your service is with (vonage, skype-whomever).
Also, if you want to go cordless-don't buy any of the out-dated 5.8 or lower mhz phones. They interfere with your wireless internet/networking even if you use them on a landline. Research brand names. Vtech is unbelievably cheap, but most people are unhappy with the quality.
So now-I have one unit plugged into the mj on my desktop-which is always on anyway, and the other I am free to plug into a regular wall outlet, so I'm not strapped to a pc to use the phone. Calls (from both units-can even use them together) sound perfect-no buzz, no static, and volume stays even now. Phone rings like it's supposed to, and call quality I would grade the same or better than my cellular service. People can't tell I'm using anything out of the ordinary. It sounds like any other phone call-and now I'm loud and clear every time.
My desktop computer is running XP service pack 2, and I was able to transfer the mj to it with no problems. I didn't even have to re-enter any of my account info. As it is an older machine with WAY less ram/more usage history, before I ever even attempted to plug the mj in I ran the pc through a driver scan, registry cleaner, and did maintenance (defrag and cleanup), and optimized it for processing speed.
Because I share my internet connection-512k dl/1250 ul between 3 comps, I also went into my router configuration and gave the mj ports highest priority in the QOS scheduling, and changed xp settings to give priority to background services. I don't even know if that is a problem for other people, but I was concerned about calls getting through while running p2p or other apps that bog down my bandwidth/cpu.
As I said-I don't know if that would have been a problem anyway-but it made sense to me to pre-plan for the best possible environment..... and everything operates nicely together without a hitch.
I'm going to order another one for my daughter. She's 9 and constantly borrowing my phone to talk to friends. Gonna score some major points giving her a dedicated line, and get my phones back to myself for a change |
