I know that today's standard for USB is the much faster, 2.0 version, but I have an older laptop with older USB connections, version 1. I do have a card for the laptop that supplies the faster USB connections, however it's two slots are tied up with hubs, connecting a slew of other hardware, while the older USB connections are sitting there empty. Will this bottleneck the MJ and cause any problems?

I have an old Dell PC ( It is a P3 with 1 meg of ram)
which I will use as a backup for my MJ should my main PC fail. I have tested it with my MJ and it works just fine and yes it is USB 1.
I am running Micro XP on it and nothing else..

I can confirm Joe's findings! Only USB 1.1 is needed.

Another confirmation - I ran it on USB 1.1 for about a year until I spent $5 and bought a USB 2 PCI card for my old PIII box. Other than the convenience of having more USB ports, moving MJ to USB 2.0 didn't make any difference.
