Windows 7 64-bit, screensaver and power options won't work at all. They better fix this crap soon, I'm sick of manually clicking a shortcut to my screensaver every time I'm done using my PC for a while.

Try this. I have Windows 7 home premium 64 bit. My power options are working perfectly now. You do it once, you don't ever have to do it again. Even if you turn off or restart your computer.

I have searched several forums. The link below will take you to the answer. It is from a user named amigo_boy. It can take some time depending on how well you are with computers. The main thing is, my screen saver came on and then a minute later, my monitor automatically turned off like it was supposed to. YEA!!!

You are now chatting with 'Bridgette'

Bridgette: Hello, how may I help you?

James: hello

James: i am having a problem after the newest upgrade to my magicjack

Bridgette: May I know the exact nature of your problem with full details please?

James: my screensaver will not come on

James: i have researched this problem on the internet and it seems to be pretty typical after the new upgrade

Bridgette: May I please have your magicJack phone number?

James: xxxxxxxxxx

Bridgette: Thanks for the information.

Bridgette: But if you unplug the device, will your screen saver work?

James: yes

Bridgette: Okay.

Bridgette: With our new upgrade, magicjack was designed to stay active all the time and will prevent your computer from going to sleep state.

James: the screensaver is not sleep

Bridgette: Yes, due to the new upgrades, the screen saver or sleep mode if magicJack is plugged in will not function.

James: so why did it work fine before the upgrade? i fail to see why this is needed

Bridgette: I know this can be frustrating and I would have accommodated your request if it were possible. But we have already reported this concern since a lot of Customers don't want this James. Rest assured that we are working on it.

James: ok. thanks. is there an estimated time frame for another upgrade?

Bridgette: We do not have a date yet James. Thank you for your understanding and patience.

James: ok, please add me to the list of customers that would prefer the screensaver to work. thanks.

Bridgette: Yes James. I will take note that here in our end.

James: ok, thanks again

Bridgette: You're welcome!

Bridgette: Thank you for stopping by to chat, I hope I did a good job at addressing your concerns. Please take a second to answer a one question survey about the service I provided. Please click the "close" button on the top right of this screen and the survey will appear. Thanks again!

So, for now I need to do something else. I tried the solution satoru posted, but it didn't work for me. I'm pretty sure I did it correctly. I will have to try what balismb posted and get back. I'm running Windows 7 Enterprise.

At least they claim to be fixing it.

Be sure to run the Command Prompt as administrator, otherwise you won't be able to make changes. Also, use the string that shows up when you type in "powercfg /requests" in your "requestsoverride" command.

On a side note, I bought and am using the Ooma system now. Wow, that is a neat system. The little box acts as an answering machine, with play, rewind, and fast forward buttons. It doesn't forward your voicemails by e-mail though (that is a premium feature). MJ has lost this customer. I'm keeping MJ until my subscription expires in January.

I spoke to Tech Support at Magic Jack today online. Here was their answer when I asked why my screen saver no longer worked:

"Ideally, the power saving options of your system should be disabled when the device is plugged in. We have purposely designed our updated software that way because when a system goes into power save, most likely its USB ports and internet capabilities are limited which is a requirement for our device to function correctly.

There have been instances wherein customers missed important calls thinking the device is enabled while on power save. We want to prevent that from happening to you, which is why we disabled the power saving options of the system while the device is plugged in. If the device is unplugged, your power options will kick back in. Of course any calls that comes while the device is unplugged will go to your voicemail or to the number you have set up to forward it to."

Yes, but what the MagicJack programmers should know, as most computer users know, is that simply having the screensaver come on, or the monitor in power saver mode, does not put the whole system to sleep. It still leaves the USB ports and internet connection active, and MagicJack works fine. If they want to disable sleep mode or hibernation, that's OK, but they shouldn't hijack the computer so you can't even run a screensaver automatically. MagicJack has always made it clear that their device doesn't work when the computer is turned off. Just because a few less well informed users don't understand that sleep mode is basically the same as turning off the computer, doesn't mean the rest of the computer user world should suffer a loss of an important feature. They should have spent just a little extra effort to program this update to at least give us the option of turning the disabling code off. The way they did it shows very little regard for their base of existing customers. If they don't recognize this, and issue a correcting update soon, I will be switching to NetTalk when my current subscription runs out. I will do this, even though the Dos-code patch in earlier posts has solved the problem for now.

Thanks, Satoru for posting the above link. It worked perfectly for me. Made a restore point before trying, just in case, but happily, it looks like the stupid 'glitch' is solved for me now, too.

I might point out that there is an error in amigo_boy's dosbatch code.
---------------
powercfg /requestsoverride PROCESS magicJack.exe DISPLAY
powercfg /requestsoverride PROCESS ^
\Device\HarddiskVolume1\Users\????\AppData\Roamin\mjusbsp\magicJack.exe ^
DISPLAY
---------------

"Roamin" should be "Roaming".

The following command shows MJ has a request to prevent display and system power savings. If you get an error, you need to run the command prompt as an Administrator:

Code:
C:\>powercfg /requests
DISPLAY:
[PROCESS] \Device\HarddiskVolume1\Users\????\AppData\Roaming\mjusbsp\magicJack.exe

SYSTEM:
[PROCESS] \Device\HarddiskVolume1\Users\????\AppData\Roaming\mjusbsp\magicJack.exe

AWAYMODE:
None.

The following commands will override (disable) the power request:

Code:

powercfg /requestsoverride PROCESS magicJack.exe DISPLAY
powercfg /requestsoverride PROCESS \Device\HarddiskVolume1\Users\????\AppData\Roaming\mjusbsp\magicJack.exe DISPLAY

Notice one command has the full path as it appeared in the requests output. Be sure to use the path from your requests output. You need both or the power savings won't work.

This patch will survive reboots. You can check by running the command before and after a reboot

Code:

powercfg /requestsoverride

Hope this update helps everyone!!

This worked well with my Win 7 64 bit. However, I used the following slightly different command to overwrite both the DISPLAY and SYSTEM (notice the additional "SYSTEM" at the end of both commands)

Code:
powercfg /requestsoverride PROCESS magicJack.exe DISPLAY SYSTEM
powercfg /requestsoverride PROCESS \Device\HarddiskVolume1\Users\????\AppData\Roaming\mjusbsp\magicJack.exe DISPLAY SYSTEM

Thanks for posting the solution!

I have a 32-bit vista home premium. The latest update broke my monitor power saving mode. I just complained on their live chat. Hopefully, we'll gather strength in numbers.

Prior to the upgrade, my screen saver doesn't always work. I found that if I click the "red" button or leave the cursor in the "editable text field(for calling)" as the last thing before leaving the keyboard, chances are that the screen savor will kick in. With the new upgrade, the screen saver seems to be fine so far. It just broke the monitor power saving mode.

Just wanted to share my 2-cents. Thx.

Since the uupgrade, my monitor will not sleep, but will run till I physically turn it off. This sucks! I spent 30 minuites in chat only to have them basically tell me "We are aware of the problem and aint gonna fix it" . Run your hardware until in breaks.
