Hello all! Very Happy

I've been lurking around for months and finally decided to jump on the Thin Client bandwagon.

Anyway, I bought myself a new T5710 off ebay, upgraded the Flash to 4GB, and the RAM to 1GB and sucessfully installed a full (not slimmed or nlited) copy of Windows XP SP3 using a USB flash drive (Asus EEE PC tutorial).

Everything works perfect except for the integrated audio. At first windows could not find the drivers and once I was connected to the internet and let windows search for drivers online it found them but the audio device (in Device Manager) reads "Cannot start device". I've searched for T5710 audio drivers on hp.com/support and everywhere else but have found nothing...

Has anyone encountered this, or am I the only person running a full copy of XP on my MagicJack Thin Client?

PS - This problem has not affected my ability to use the MagicJack (with a regular phone) but I'm real picky and don't like having things I can't fully use...

This is slightly off topic, but not much as the answer to my question will determine if I have to go to a full featured XP or not.

If I buy a WiFi product that comes with a CD of drivers that will work on XP, will they also work with XPe? The product I am interested in buying is a USB WiFi receiver with an SMA antenna connection. I want to put an external antenna on the roof. I dont want to use an internal card because the "expansion" slot costs more than the WiFi card!!!

Well, back on subject, What is the minimum flash memory to run a full XP on the T5700?

I just got one off ebay and it has 256/256 so wont run XP....but the software I want to run, some OBDII software, needs 500 mb AND wont initialize properly in XPe when I try to run it on a 1 gb USB flash drive.

I will also be running MJ on this machine installed in my car.

I am having compatibility problems on my T5710 with 512 memory...not flash...upgrade The seller is working with me on it because he guaranteed it. But I dont want to get into another hassle with upgrading the T5700 to 2 gb flash.

I ordered the $2.86 44 pin adapter from China and I am now scratching around in my junk box for 2 gb laptop hard drive I bought a few years ago when I was hacking an "Eyeopener".

My problems with the 512 gb memory went away when the vendor sent me a replacement that worked just fine.

Hi all, thanks for the great info. It's great to have experts to help us figure out how to make the best of our computers.

Can someone check my work here and make sure I'm on the right track?

I run MJ on an old laptop. I am going to replace the hard drive with a CF card and adapter. I am going to use nlite to create a small version of windows XP Home. So then I need to install EWF? I'm not quite sure how that works.. I will try to read the page that you linked to again. So the EWF will keep Windows from writing to my CF card? It will just write temp files, etc. to RAM? If I need to write to the CF card I just turn off EWF? Is it hard to install EWF?

I just started to use the program but nlite can take your exsisting windows cd and make a new install cd. The new cd will have a more condensed 'lite' version of windows. You can select what programs, drivers, services are installed. So if you are installing on a memory card or small hard drive (or if you just want a more compact and lean copy of windows) you can keep your windows install to a much smaller size.

Seems to be a really cool program so far.

I rummaged around in my parts box and found a 10gb laptop HD. It has 43 pins and then a space and 4 pins apparently for jumpers?. Is this what is called a 44 pin format? One pin is missing at the center on one side, I guess as a key.

I hope this will work on the TC as it is essentially free.

I checked clearances for the 10gb drive and it fits easily inside the T5700. It would not fit in a T5710 because of more heat sinks. The T5700, or at least the one I have that is labeled "Engineering Sample" has very small heat sinks compared to the 5710.

Now I wonder if there will be enough cooling without a fan and a real HD inside the case. Any ideas?

I have ordered the 44 pin adapter and already have a cable with the right connectors on either end. The adapter to the HD has a 5V input on it, any idea where I should get the 5volts

The HD is an IBM Telstar drive.
