I contacted Magicjack to find out if there jack works here in Canada and they said that they were working on it and that numbers were not available yet.I have read here that it has been used in Toronto. Can anyone tell me if I bought the Magicjack if it would work for me here on the St.Lawerence River in Canada? Also i"ve read something about area codes being needed and which ones work in your area. What"s that all about?Hope this is not a repeat question. Thanks for replies....Bart53

As you explore the postings here you will learn several things.

First, you will learn that MJ chat support has a very limited script. You asked "A?" and they answered "B." The short answer, which is even documented on MJ's web site, is that you can use your MJ anywhere you have a compatible PC and a broadband internet connection. There are caveats in the long answer, which you will pick up as you read through the previous postings.

Second, there are healthy discussions here both on the topic of Canadian DID numbers ("Will they ever become available?") and selecting a phone number in the right Area Code and Rate Center. Since Canadian phone numbers are not [yet?] available, you might want to select a phone number near your favorite friend or relative in the US.

I live in Canada and have the majic jack.
All you have to do is pick a US Area Code - telephone number. I chose California (no particular reason).
If you have relatives or friends that you contact on a regular basis in the US, try to get the same area code that they have. They will be able to call you as though you are their next door neighbours - free as well.
Hope this helps.

I'm in Vancouver and use MJ all the time for outgoing calls, mostly long distance. I also use MJ for local calls too if I need to do a conference call with my 2 line phone.

No you can't get a Canadian number for MJ. But for making long distance calls, you don't need a local number. As another poster said, just pick a number in the US, somewhere where you have friends or relatives (it's a free call for them to call you). Or if you don't know anyone in the US, just pick a number for fun, say New York City or Los Angeles. Your "location" shows up on the destination caller ID.

MJ is not likly to get numbers in Canada as the phone industry is more of a monoploy between 4 large companies that are sure to do everything possable to stop a one year flat fee company from coming in. In Canada the government in my Opinion "is very corrupt and usealy requires bribe or pay off money to hjave them do a service for business" And this is is coming first hand from a Canadian Business Person who dealt in 2003 with the BS that MP's in Canada do for extra cash. If it is not going to them it usually goes to some offshore holding company which links to the kids or other relatives of the MP that would be taken the payment. This is why our company moved to the USA and found it a more balanced environment where most government spending is published to the public unlike in Canada hidden.

Now ask your self what MP's have opposed letting outside phone companies to come into Canada Question
