O.K. looks like the microdrive in my t5520 died. Alpsman hasn't been responding to e-mails for over a month. Found the same drives on e-bay, but they've just charge my credit card and don't ship anything, causing me the hassle of dealing with e-bay and my credit card! So I'm asking, does anybody have a replacement at a reasonable price? Sorry to whine, but I'd really like to get my TC back up and running. Thanks

I've got a 6gb microdrive out of one of Alpman's 5520's. He forgot to include the power cord so I can't use the unit.
PM me and we can figure out a price.

a 4 gb will work also.

here is a lot of 2 6gb for cheap (or at least reasonable). his 4gb are more expensive!

I think I may try it out on a flash card soon. these MD don't seem very hardy.

cheers

Thanks. Not seeing where it's a quantity of two. But that is a better price than I've seen else were, except the one that didn't show up ; )

So are you just thinking about using a regular CF card instead? I was trying to get a USB drive to work along those same lines, but no luck. I'd be curious to know how you fair. I know theres a limit on the writes to a CF card, but I agree if the MD's aren't standing up, what's the diff?

my bad, that is a single MD. he also has lots of 2 4gb here:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Hitachi-MicroDrive-4GB-Card-Compact-Flash-CF-LOT-2-/130386243666?cmd=ViewItem&pt=Digital_Camera_Memory_Cards&hash=item1e5ba03052

the listings are similar, so I assumed they were also a lot of 2. I almost bought a few of them. glad you pointed that out or I would have been really pi$$ed when only half of what I expected showed up!

As far as the CF failure, I don't have any practical experience with how long they would take to burn up. I know the image only uses about 1.5gb, and there is a 256mb pagefile. When the thing is idling, I don't think there would be much pagefile activity, just when it's running. you can always disable the pagefile, but, then I don't know how much performance would suffer. I know that my TCs with flash drives run faster than with the MD just due to the latency of the 3600rpm ~4mb read/write as opposed to that of a typical CF.

Also, the CF adapter in mine is a dual CF, so I think I could pop another flash or MD in the other and put the swap file over there so that the disk with the OS would have minimal rewrites and have a dedicated one for the swap file. Or vice versa. It all just depends on how much you want to invest in this.

anyway, I have 5 T5520s that I have picked up that I am going to try to build out for family and friends. When you add up the $ for all of the pieces/parts, you begin to appreciate the alpman pricepoint. If you're not buying in bulk you can hardly break even.

Anyway, good luck with your struggle!
