Do you think magicJack is over priced when you consider the alternatives? I think magicJack is currently overpriced when compare it the newly released netTalk Duo currently being offered at the special rate of $62.96($69.99 MSRP) which includes the first year of service. Unlike the magicJack the netTalk Duo does not require a computer to use and has many features that are currently not available with a standard magicJack installation.
Here are some of my preferred features:
1. Computer not required to use the netTalk Duo device
2. Works with your computer in a similar way as magicJack if you are traveling
3. Forwarding rings multiple phone numbers including SIP addresses
4. Voicemail can be turned without additional software
5. netTalk is more energy efficient than most magicJack thin client configurations
MSRP pricing for device and 1st year of service:
netTalk Duo $70.00
magicJack $40.00
Cost of additional year of service:
netTalk Duo $30.00 $2.50 a month
magicJack $20.00 $1.66 a month
I have used both of these services have decided to go with netTalk as my primary provider. Both of these providers my actual be overpriced when consider that Google Voice and Whistle Phone can provide you similar service for free. So for now I will continue to my TK6000 with the above mentioned free providers as backup services. _________________ magicJack

| I have both of these well the Tk600 and of the two. In my experience the Mj has a better more stable network than netTalk. The NetTalk has come a long way in the last few months and is better than when I first got it. The Nettalk cam be very picky about what brand of routers you use with it. I would Love to see Mj come out with there version of the Nettalk device where it plugs into the router and no computer needed with the Mj network. I like both and use both. I don't think that it is overpriced. Beats the local rip off phone company! |

I realize MJ doesn't work for everyone but for me the next five years are already paid for and the upfront cost is under $100, I'm saving a alot calling Florida & Michigan.
MJ beats the heck out of anything I used previously. |

If you keep your computer on 24/7 for the sake of MJ, then it is really overpriced. If you use it as your desk phone when the computer is on anyway, it is by fat the best deal in town.
Google voice is not a phone service. You cannot use it if you do not have one. |

I guess I'm missing something here. Overpriced? What kind of wattage are we talking about? My laptop uses 28 to 30 watts per hour - according to what is taking place - which amounts to 10 cents per day electric use if used 24/7. Is that what we are quibbling about? 10 cents a day? _________________ Bill

Well, sir, my laptop uses more than that. Plus the USB hub plus the gateway plus the printer on stand by plus the laptop fan You do not have to measre it, you just touch all those devices and adapters and you know that it is far, far more than 20 W.
And guess what- there are still people who actually use a desk top. THEN you can some real kilowatts burned.
Plus, if you live in tropical climate like me, consider a few kWs cooling for every kW burned.
If you check this forum you will find out that a number iof people uses a dedicated thin client for this reason. |

Sorry to hear your Laptop uses a lot of power. Mine is an Acer with 4g memory/500g HD/CD-DVD/camera and a few other things running. An AMD 2.2g processor which is faster than my desktop 3g processor by Intel. Measure by meter called "Kill-A-Watt", my laptop uses 14 watts when in screen-saver mode. Out of screen-saver it uses 28-30 watts (that's 50% more than the 20 watts you quoted). My powered USB hub uses 1 watt when computer is off. It uses 3 watts with computer running with GPS charging, MJ, and printer (but Off) plugged in.
Now, I would use my computer during the day, MJ or no MJ. I don't live in the Tropics, but Texas pushes 100 degrees daily this time of year. And I would have my a/c cooling house whether computer was on or not.
So, my point is that an extra dime a day (for me, actually less as computer is on about 13 hours daily) was not worth my hassle of thin clients, or whatever, to worry about. Particularly in light of fact than MJ is saving me $960/yr since dropping land line. _________________ Bill

What my mini tower computer uses in electric for one month is around $4 max,This is well within my comfort level for phone service, and with the $69.99 five year prepay for MJ service that is less than $15 a year for the service.
(4*12)+15=$63 a Year. |
