I've had MJ for 3 years. It was fine the first year, so I got rid of my landline, used only MJ at home. Now MJ is being obnoxious....terrible beeping/interference/drops calls/weird sounds......hooked up to brand new HP laptop.....upgraded the MJ software.......still problematic, MJ basically unusable with my DECT 6.0 cordless system now. My friends hate talking through the constant noise.
I paid for 5 years of MJ service, but I'm not complaining ($1 per month will not break me, even unused). My problem is that cell phones don't work at my house.....only TracFone transmits/receives here.....but the MAJOR cell carriers are useless unless we drive 3 miles toward the Village....my only choice is cable telephone but it's too expensive on my SSD income. So here I am.....in rural Catskill Mountains.....no regular landline......MJ has PMS.....only the TracFone to depend on but even that gets costly at 10 cents a minute.
Any advice? MJ is quasi-working, just not the way it used to. If I lose my electricity, I'm down to TracFone as my only source of communication. Smoke signals are looking good. . |

Sorry to hear of your difficulties
try the following
dial using the MJ softphone as a test. This will rule out any MJ dongle hardware probs
eliminate the USB extension cord
try the VOIP test at http://myvoipspeed.visualware.com/ use the Dulles, VA location (requires Java)
try at a neighbor's who has a different internet provider
sounds like a 'net connection problem at first blush. Who is your Internet provider?
revert to smoke signals if none of the above point to a problem.
If your internet test results suck, search on QOS settings for your router or
search for HAWKING for the adapter that implements QOS automatically
If you are truly adventurous AND you voip test shows poor results, search for 'registry hacks' on this forum to point you to the proper registry hive and play with the codes calues. By default, MJ uses an uncompressed codec (G711). If you have limited upload bandwidth, changing to another compressed codec will minimize the bandwidth requirements
That's about it for my free advice _________________ Good Luck

Thanks for your suggestions......if only I understood your tech-talk about codec and stuff.
I have RoadRunner through Time Warner Cable for Internet. I remember that TWC maintained my "lite" price ($30 per month vs. $60 per month) by keeping my speeds at lower levels, which is fine since I don't do much uploading/downloading online.
I will try your suggestions ASAP. When my far-away friends can't reach me by phone for days at a time, they send the local police to check on me. It's really thoughtful of them to care that much, but somehow I think the cops are muttering under their breath about these crazy older ladies. |
